This weekend I caught a fascinating movie on TV:  Meryl Streep is a tough, no-nonsense nun in Doubt.  The great actress drew me in with her portrayal of a woman with the grit to stand up to a priest she knew was molesting altar boys in a patriarchal system stacked against her.  It was the last few minutes of the movie that surprised me and illuminated a truth about the human condition.

The word holiday came into Middle English before the 12th century and has always meant a holy day.  In modern times, it has acquired an additional meaning:  a day exempt  from work; specifically, a day when work stops for the commemoration of  an event.  Americans take vacations;  the British go on holiday.  It is a  period of exemption or relief.

It was one of those never-forgotten insignificant moments.  On a 90-degree in the shade day in the 1950s, my hair in a pony tail, neck hairs curled in  sweat, I danced to "Kansas City" as I labored over a hot ironing  board.
